Bistro Sakana - Yaletown

Irasshaimase!

Some of you may have already done the Google search to understand what the title of the blog means. Most of you probably don't care. I'll tell you anyways. "Irasshaimase" is the Japanese phrase for "Come In" or "Welcome to the store." You will hear it from chefs at my favorite Japanese restaurants in the city of Vancouver, including the one featured in my first post.

I am looking for some hobbies and I know I enjoy writing...in small doses. I have been working on a project in Vancouver for 8 months now. I've grown to love the city for one reason in particular, THE FOOD! Don't get me wrong, Vancouver is amazing for many other reasons, but let's just say that I eat at a lot of restaurants. Every night to be exact. I have cooked one meal at my condo. Cooking is currently not one of my hobbies, but when I move back to the real world I may just become inspired to give it a shot. For now, my only inspiration is to EAT and to help friends visiting or living in Vancouver to pick that top spot. Whether you are treating your mother, entertaining clients, impressing a hot date, hanging out with friends, warming up for a dance battle, or just plain lazy to cook one evening, swing by for a top pick and hopefully a laugh. If you are ever in the city and want to join for a meal, I love trading stories with new people. No one I eat with is featured....normally because I eat alone, grooving to music, which will undoubtedly be featured alongside the food.

I hope you enjoy!

Bistro Sakana

Cuisine: Japanese
The Down Low: Fresh fish, which I've normally never heard of, served with a flare for presentation
Favorite Dish: Tempura Yam Fries
Music Set: Arty's Essential Mix (as ALPHA 9, he just released "You and I" CHECK IT OUT!)

First stop on my jump into the snobby world of Vancouver food blogging is Bistro Sakana. I enjoy sitting at the sushi bar each time I go. The sushi chefs really are craftsmen, and nice guys. While the service can be a bit slow with only two of them behind the bar building colourful seafood creations, overall the place is a treat for anyone looking for something fresh. Ambiance is mediocre, but Arty never disappoints.

Sakana, in the heart of Yaletown

Tempting but one drink will have me thinking dance floor to burn off the sushi

Someone else's sashimi. Next time

He is probably decent making smores also.

After eating two of them I remembered I was supposed to be making a food blog.
Oops on the picture

The chef's choice. Can't guess what they were

Hot boxed my pork belly's crib.

Not sure why they gave my pork a steam shower.
Where can I sign up?

The highlight. Stop staring at me

The joker was still waving at me. Talk about FRESH

I didn't really enjoy pulling out my phone every couple minutes to take pictures (and I always felt like a Brad doing it), so there will probably be fewer in future posts. Hopefully that still has some of you coming back.

Tasty dreams

JB

Homer St. Cafe - Yaletown

Cuisine: Western   Rotisserie The Down Low:  With a large portrait of Winston Churchill, a cock room, and a menu that requires a dictionary to interpret, you are sure to impress any guest(s) that you take to Homer St. Favorite Dish:  The meatloaf wrapped in bacon, and the pork belly appetizer will have vegetarians from across Vancouver (>50% of the population) converging on the joint to protest and toss organic tofu at the windows. The rest of us can feel protected by the sharpened silverware. Music Pairing:  If I was really trying to make an appropriate pairing, it would be some sort of jazz, blues or swing, but I have a Jimi Hendrix vinyl on in the background, so bringing back some R&R classics.  Lover Man and Purple Haze Every time I go to Homer St. Cafe and Bar I feel like I should be dressed in some sort of James Bond tuxedo, speaking with a British accent. That's not because the place is overly fancy; it just has this aura of sop...

Rodney's Oyster House - Yaletown

Cuisine: Seafood The Down Low:  All the boat decorations almost make you feel sea sick after sitting through a big meal. Although it’s more likely the lobster poutine and beers will be to blame, as opposed to the décor. Favorite Dish:  New England Clam Chowder on the West Coast Music Pairing: Alpha 9 in Miami for a State of Trance   Walking into Rodney’s is like walking into a rustic, seaside bed and breakfast. The old lady running the B&B was a decorator in the city before retiring to the coastal village. A lot of thought has gone into making the place 'authentic.' She loves the sea and especially the sea-men. "Wait, what?" That's right, let's address the whale in the room. There are sexual undertones dotting the place. You'd really have to like oysters to confidently wear this shirt in public ...and now I am sexualizing a perfectly normal oyster shucking picture. The old lady at the B&B has me in her trap. Watch ou...

Dynasty Seafood Restaurant - Fairview

Cuisine:  Chinese The Down Low:  There is no such thing as small portions and the dishes are not cheap, so bring along your entire Chinese-food loving family if you want some variety Favorite Dish: My middle name is Sweet & Sour Music Pairing:  Nothing like the Mulan soundtrack, but The Funk Hunters just released a mix sure to make a man out of you. Night Spell 5 Like any good Chinese restaurant, the place was buzzing when I walked in. The staff operate like a colony of ants, scurrying in-between the tables in the blink of an eye, and managing to carry 3x their body weight in food. Sipping on some tea and watching the dining room floor is both entertaining and nerve-racking. You sit on the edge of your seat waiting for a collision, and never have I seen so many near misses with acrobatic saves.  Maybe an expansion to a mini Cirque du Soleil restaurant is coming? I'm sure it would not be hard to find some spectacular gymnasts, kung fu artists and...
