Brunch in Vancouver - Feast vs. Catch 122 vs. Nero Belgian Waffle Bar

Cuisine: Basic B*tch
The Down Low: The only thing you have to worry about at brunch is the night before having a couple of sodas and breaking it down too low on a dance floor
Favorite Dish: Anything with maple syrup (but the avocado toast at Feast is a close second)
Music Pairing: I am probably grooving to some electro the night before, so I will keep the party going at brunch and suggest Above & Beyond at Ultra Music Festival.

This post has just caught the attention of every lady in the city wearing Hunter rain boats, reading in Oprah's book club and watching season 35 of Grey's Anatomy. And I cannot forget all the gentlemen in the city rocking a pony tail, puffing on a vape and being dragged around by the ladies wearing Hunters.

I spend most of my weekends in Calgary, so I admit to not being well-versed in the field of top Vancouver brunch spots. When I do wake up with a headache Saturday / Sunday morning in in the city, I am normally looking for the shortest line. For Metro Vancouver that is about as easy as finding a restaurant without any chopsticks. But below is a selection of some spots I have stumbled upon and enjoyed (headaches not included).

Feast - West Vancouver

The night before, myself and my now girlfriend raved to Arty at Celebrities. You will recognize the name from past musical pairings. Although its a dream to be listening to Arty with a piece of sushi in my mouth, it was also pretty cool to be listening to him play (eat) a couple of feet away.

Focused on that sushi (from Minami)

The next morning we had a big day planned, so a brunch stop in West Vancouver before hitting the mountains was a much needed kick start. Feast seemed like a safe pick and it definitely did not disappoint. I have since recommended the spot to some co-workers who have also really enjoyed brunch there.

A miracle sunny day. Rare this "spring"

I expected to open it up and see a Grade 6 History project with pages tea-stained and burned

The best avocado toast I've ever had. So basic

Catch 122 Cafe Bistro - Gastown

I visited Catch 122 with a friend after a blurry evening at the Cambie. Why a night out at a run-down international hostel, you ask? Well both the Red Room (Latin night) and Portside Pub (next door to dinner) had waits longer than a relatively small brunch line, so we stood no chance of getting in. No surprise, we also stood no chance of getting into the brunch spots we planned to visit the next day, so we were almost fortunate to visit the Cambie and wake up after noon (we were once again poor backpackers for an evening).

Despite our late start, we still had a short wait at Catch 122. Honestly the hash was not greasy enough for my liking, but I can see why some people would appreciate the healthier and more natural style of the chefs. No doubt frequented by all the hipster Gastown & East Van yoga instructors.

Can you still call it brunch @2pm? When you get to bed at 5am you sure can.

Just call me the sriracha - ketchup Picasso

I think the waiter got tired of walking to our table for water and coffee refills

Nero Belgian Waffle Bar - Robson

Brad, Chad and I visited Nero Belgian Waffle Bar when we walked by and noticed other polo shirts inside. Hardly as sophisticated as a Belgian, more similar to a waffle, we still did not struggle picking between the few items on the menu. Likely the hardest decision of the day was the choice between a Brussels Waffle ("a light and crispy waffle made from a yeast leavened batter"), and a Liege Waffle ("a soft, dense and sweet waffle. A yeast leavened dough stuffed with pearl sugar caramelized in a cast iron waffle iron").

The plum tea was so polo club (and really good)

Now this is my type of appetizing brunch (the Brussels Waffle)
(sorry Catch 122, but your healthy hash needs to come with maple syrup)

Next brunch spot on the list is Jam....but only if the line dies down

After brunch, back to bed. Sleeping till Dinner.

Tasty dreams,

JB

Phnom Penh - Chinatown

Cuisine: Cambodian / Vietnamese The Down Low: Just for the food, I give Phnom Penh top marks in Vancouver. Can it be dethroned? Favorite Dish: No one I have talked to about Phnom Penh knows anything about the menu aside from the butter beef and the chicken wings. But when you have found perfection, why take a risk with anything else. Music Pairing: Another one of my Anjunabeats' favorites, Oliver Smith at ABGT250 . He just released a new track called Lovingly which is featured in the set. Vietnamese? Cambodian? Chinese? A bit of an identity crisis Cambodia and Vietnam are in my opinion two of the world's great countries, with food contributing highly to that ranking. While working in Southeast Asia for six months last year, I had the opportunity to visit Siem Reap and Phnom Penh with my family. Unfortunately the only time I ever got sick was while visiting Angkor Wat, and it definitely was caused by something I ate the morning of. Although puking before running int

Rodney's Oyster House - Yaletown

Cuisine: Seafood The Down Low:  All the boat decorations almost make you feel sea sick after sitting through a big meal. Although it’s more likely the lobster poutine and beers will be to blame, as opposed to the décor. Favorite Dish:  New England Clam Chowder on the West Coast Music Pairing: Alpha 9 in Miami for a State of Trance   Walking into Rodney’s is like walking into a rustic, seaside bed and breakfast. The old lady running the B&B was a decorator in the city before retiring to the coastal village. A lot of thought has gone into making the place 'authentic.' She loves the sea and especially the sea-men. "Wait, what?" That's right, let's address the whale in the room. There are sexual undertones dotting the place. You'd really have to like oysters to confidently wear this shirt in public ...and now I am sexualizing a perfectly normal oyster shucking picture. The old lady at the B&B has me in her trap. Watch ou
